About Travel-by-Games

Margaret S. Emmons

Go Travel: Africa pulled together a number of life interests and experiences of the author. Three trips to Africa and two to Israel contributed directly. A souvenir game, “Jerusalem Picture Card Game,” was such a big hit with her grandsons that it served as a model for several homemade geography card games played like Go Fish and Authors. USA and Canada games proved to be very successful learning/teaching models over a period of several years of elementary and middle school.

Then came the inspiration to make a truly professional game. Africa was the obvious choice. A request for a tractor from a church visited in Ghana had sparked a keen interest in supporting agricultural development work in Africa. This, in turn, led to many helpful contacts. These coupled with a rich supply of photos from the trips to Africa made the possibility a reality.

Work with graphic artists in Cleveland and a printer in Iowa City for about three years resulted in Go Travel: Africa. It is a game to be enjoyed by all ages from pre-schoolers to grandparents. The countries become familiar and the continent demystified, all while players are having great fun. Not a quiz game, prior knowledge is not necessary to enjoy playing.
